1691 - LatticeECP3: Can LatticeECP3 support OC3/OC12/OC48 SONET/SDH framer or mapper applications?
LatticeECP3 has SERDES block that can run in simple 8-bit-only mode to support SDH/SONET (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/ Synchronous Optical Networking) framer and mapper applications.
System requirement might provide some flexibility. There are users who plan to drive optical module for long haul applications. In this case it is necessary to meet a full SONET/SDH jitter compliant(defined in standard GR-253 and ITU-TG.709), an external clock cleaner is required to ensure the SONET/SDH compliant requirement.
There are special cases when users who only want to use the FPGA with soft framer IP or Data mapper IP for short distance backplane transceiver application. In this particular case since they take care of the jitter requirement issue outside of the scope of this back-plane-only or in-house-only system, they might choose not to use an external clock cleaning device.
